IGARSS 2024 SUMMER SCHOOL

The summer school which is held in conjunction with IGARSS 2024, is sponsored by the IEEE Geoscience and Remote Sensing Society (GRSS) and hosted by the National Technical University of Athens, School of Rural Surveying and Geoinformatics Engineering.

Introduction

The IGARSS 2024 Summer School entitled "From Data to Knowledge and from Knowledge to Wisdom" is addressed to students and young researchers who have great interest and enthusiasm in accessing and retrieving data from Earth Observation (EO) platforms. It is designed to equip participants with knowledge and techniques on EO exploitation, machine learning (ML), the Internet of Things, and data fusion, towards developing customized applications. Distinguished experts from various Academic and Research Organizations will share their expertise and provide participants with theory insights, tailored training and hands on, serving as inspiration and motivation for further engaging in the field of EO.

The summer school is designed around specific thematic priority domains, namely the Atmosphere/Health/Urban, and Agroecosystems/Sustainable Agriculture/Food Security. Participants will have the opportunity to attend introductory lectures on various aspects of remote sensing, in situ measurements, sensors, and satellite data to enhance their understanding of the EO field and its practical applications. In addition, multiple hands-on sessions will be offered, providing practical experience in novel instrumentation and data processing techniques, including the in-situ component of Earth Observation (e.g. low cost sensors operation).

To further enhance the learning experience, a "challenge" activity will be assigned during the course of the summer school. It will be focusing on different aspects of EO, allowing participants, working in groups, to apply their newly acquired skills and knowledge through the hands on activities. Cross-cultural and interdisciplinary collaboration and exchange of ideas will be pursued during the "challenges", and each group will present its deliverables and findings.

A Scientific Committee will evaluate groups' achievements and provide comments and general consultation

Three keynote lectures will be delivered on subjects such as data ethics (including data management and FAIR principles), the role of EO in supporting the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs), and an interactive interview with an ERC holder, to broaden the perception of EO exploitation from participants' end.
